Offshore Associated Gas Flare Reduction Module

Eni and Libya’s National Oil Corporation, operating via the Mellitah Oil & Gas joint venture, completed the Bouri Gas Utilization Project to capture and process associated offshore gas. The installation targets upstream gas recovery and emissions mitigation across offshore extraction systems.

Operational Challenge and Joint Development
Flaring associated gas during offshore hydrocarbon extraction presents both material emissions and fuel loss. Mitigating these losses requires integrating high-pressure processing modules directly into offshore platforms without interrupting base extraction.

Eni and the National Oil Corporation utilized the Mellitah Oil & Gas operating framework to combine international engineering capabilities with domestic offshore concessions. Mellitah Oil & Gas managed platform logistics, engineering procurement, and field commissioning to execute the deepwater integration.

Technical Architecture and Module Integration
The core engineering scope centered on the fabrication and installation of the Bouri Gas Recovery Module alongside dedicated tie-in pipeline infrastructure. The recovery module integrates directly into existing processing trains at the offshore Bouri field in western Libya.

The modular system captures low- and intermediate-pressure associated gas streams previously directed to flare stacks. The processing module compresses, dehydrates, and treats the sour gas stream to transport specifications, preventing flaring while maintaining safe offshore operating pressures.

Industrial Application and Infrastructure Routing
The treated gas enters transmission networks serving domestic and international energy markets:

Domestic Power Generation: The system delivers fuel gas directly to inland power generation networks, stabilizing regional thermal generation loads.

Pipeline Export: Incremental dry gas feeds into the high-pressure GreenStream export pipeline system for transit to Europe.

System Performance and Measurable Impact
The integrated compression and recovery modules achieve continuous gas diversion, yielding verified operational parameters:

Flare Mitigation: Eliminates platform flaring to reduce upstream greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 1.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent per year.

Gas Throughput: Recovers approximately 700 million standard cubic meters of incremental natural gas annually.

Downstream Utilization: Provides clean feedstocks for utility-scale electrical generation while augmenting cross-border export capacities.

The deployment establishes mechanical infrastructure supporting further planned offshore gas expansions, including the complementary A&E Structures development.
